Gibson 50th Anniversary Firebird

Gibson toast their revolutionary Firebird model in style

It's one of Gibson's most iconic models played by everyone from blues demon Johnny Winter and Eric Clapton to Paul McCartney and Dave Grohl.

Here's the info…

Light years ahead of its time when it first hit the scene in 1963, the Firebird has long been the choice of adventurous guitarists eager to break the mold for style and tone.

This radical “Reverse-Bodied” electric guitar was conceived amid the chrome and tailfins of the Motor City by noted Duesenberg car designer Ray Dietrich, forged on the workbenches of Kalamazoo, and proven on rock and blues stages all over the world, earning its undeniable “classic” status… even after it had been deleted from the Gibson line-up in 1965 for proving just too hot for a conservative guitar scene to handle.

Now Gibson USA introduces the 50th Anniversary Firebird, a glorious gold-on-gold tribute to the revolutionary original ’Bird. The 50th Anniversary Firebird is crafted with all the hallmarks that made the original Firebird unique, including the through-neck construction, versatile contemporary Firebird mini-humbucking pickups, and reversed six-a-side headstock with “banjo” tuners (upgraded to Steinberger gearless tuners on this guitar). It’s all dressed in a stunning Bullion Gold nitrocellulose finish with gold hardware and a black pickguard hot-stamped in gold with “50th Anniversary 1963-2013” and the traditional Firebird phoenix, for a look befitting its “Golden Anniversary” status.

Every great electric guitar begins with its tonewoods, and the 50th Anniversary Firebird is no exception. Like the original 1963 Firebird, this tribute is based on the complicated through-neck design that includes a multi-piece mahogany neck and body-center section with solid mahogany wings, all resulting in superb resonance and sustain.

The iconic “reverse-bodied” styling was named for its approximation of a more conventional offset double-cutaway guitar flipped front to back. The neck is carved in the slim and super-fast Firebird profile, and measures .800” at the 1st fret and .850” at the 12th. A genuine Grade-A rosewood fingerboard carries 22 medium-jumbo frets and traditional trapezoid inlays, and is topped with a PLEK-cut Corian nut.

To kick it all up a notch in the tonal stakes Gibson USA equips the 50th Anniversary Firebird with its new breed of re-engineered Firebird Mini Humbucking pickups. Loaded with ceramic magnets and wound with 44 AWG wire in the neck position and 45 AWG wire in the hotter bridge position, these dual-blade humbuckers achieve classic Firebird tone with added punch and clarity. A set of high-tech Steinberger™ gearless in-line tuners offer unparalleled efficiency while retaining the traditional “no keys” look that preserves the elegant “bird’s beak” lines of the headstock.

The pairing of a Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece offers rock-solid sustain and precise intonation—and with all hardware plated in genuine gold, it’s the perfect look for a 50th Anniversary celebration. Each guitar includes a black Gibson hardshell case and owner’s manual, and is covered by Gibson’s Limited Lifetime Warranty and 24/7/365 Customer Service. Grab your 50th Anniversary Firebird while you still can, and help celebrate five decades of a true revolutionary.
